Again, you should be moving forward to take the opening shots of the battle. Bombard the cruiser and base from afar to stay safe.
If you want to keep the cruiser alive, remember to take the time to fire into the incoming hordes. The escorts can handle them once you've softened them up.
With the Caster Drive and Advanced Caster Drive, destroying the arena should take less than a minute. Plant the charges, then hurry back to the cruiser.
